Professional Liability Insurance

There are some forms of liability insurance that have received a great amount of attention from the news media. One of the liability insurance policies that is so popular in the business world, is the Professional Liability Insurance that many business professionals in the medical field choose to use.

These medical professionals use their Professional Liability Insurance policies to protect themselves from claims filed for malpractice, and it is generally called Malpractice Insurance by people who are not familiar with insurance terminologies. Many business professionals in the medical field can not even hang up their shingle until they have some sort of Professional Liability Insurance in place.

Many hospitals require physicians that practice medicine at various hospitals in the local area, to maintain a Professional Liability Insurance policy at every hospital location where they provide medical treatment. This not only protects the physician from lawsuits, but it also protects the hospital location where he has been allowed to perform the medical services that he specializes in.

If a physician accrues a certain amount of claims for malpractice, then he may be subject to medical review by the hospital and the American Medical Association. The cost of Professional Liability Insurance is quite high for many medical professionals, and the high cost has kept many from practicing medicines at multiple hospital locations throughout a city.

Doctors that use hospital facilities are not the only type of medical professional that qualifies for Professional Liability Insurance. Any physician that provides medical treatments must have Professional Liability Insurance in force every time they treat a patient. This applies to plastic surgeons, heart surgeons, and even Doctors in General Medicine that might work in a small, country hospital with 30 rooms in it.

People that work in the medical field, but are not licensed physicians also qualify for Professional Liability Insurance. There are Professional Liability Insurance policies that are written specifically for students that are enrolled in a School of Medicine. This is because these medical students will routinely be tasked with providing medical treatment to patients in Emergency Rooms, Clinics and Operating Rooms throughout the many years that their training requires.

Every time a student provides medical treatment in a learning hospital, a patient can be assured that the nurses and surgical staff all have a Professional Liability Insurance policy on file. While mistakes might occur occasionally in a teaching hospital, the hospital is not held liable for the monetary damages. The Professional Liability Insurance policy will pay the liability fees that are issued by the Courts system. The physician will continue to practice medicine, but the lawsuit for malpractice will remain on his professional record.
