State lotteries
There are many State governments throughout the United States, that have approved legalized gambling in the form of State sponsored lotteries. The State lottery betting opportunities are closely regulated, and the computer technology for these lotteries is closely guarded. State lotteries are generally organized to provide some sort of financial benefit to State run facilities such as schools.
The funds accumulated from the sale of lottery tickets can also be used to help pay for disaster relief efforts in a State that is ravaged by damage from hurricanes and tornadoes. School systems may receive allocated amounts of funding for specific spending uses, such as playground equipment, or school lockers and renovations.
These State lotteries are managed by State lottery commissioners, who are surrounded by a large network of administrative and technical supporters. These Government sponsored organizations will be assigned to handle all aspects of organized gambling, and will typically focus on lottery marketing and distribution areas.
This could cover the areas of placement of lottery machines at retail locations that want them in their facilities, computer software and hardware needed to account for the number of sales that are generated, graphical design and distribution of scratch-off tickets, and people that will be involved in the verification process for every winning lottery ticket that is presented for payment.
At any given time, State lotteries could have up to six game types at one time offered in the form of computer generated lottery number picks. Generally, there will be computer generated games of Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6 offered, as well as Quick Picks, where the computer will select the numbers for the player automatically and present them in ticket form. Some lottery games feature an extra digit option called a Power Ball, where multi-millions of dollars can be won at one time.
The lotteries also include scratch off tickets that have low winning amounts that total $10K or less per game, or feature vacation trips to exotic locations, or plasma televisions in some cases. Other scratch off tickets will have a prize that will provide people with groceries for a year, free of charge, or fill the tanks of their car with gas for a year. Lottery tickets are sold by retailers for $1 each, and if that location sells the winning lottery ticket, then they are given a large amount of money by the State lottery commission as a bonus.
