I reckon this proverb means that the appearance can be misleading.

What is the meaning of this proverb? My great, great grandfather said this (he was born in Lancaster Co, PA, and was Pennsylvania Dutch.) right before he got in a fight with another student. I'm guessing he was ten or so at the time.
