WiFi- wireless fidelity is the latest technology that is ruling the wireless world with its amazing possibilities. The technology is based on the traditional wireless methodology like the Bluetooth is. The term refers to connectivity of multiple users using one wireless network. This technology is mostly used for accessing internet when you are using a wireless device like a mobile phone or a laptop. Now you must be overwhelmed with the word, fidelity. Have u heard it somewhere? Ok, in high fidelity stereo systems. Yes it is the same fidelity, which refers to transmitting wireless data to the station antenna. This is what happens in WiFi, the signal reaches a small antenna that is placed near your work area. This antenna finally sends the signal to the device.
The IEEE standard 802.11 standard is the bridge on which every wireless technology is based on. You name any wireless technology, it will be compatible to the standard mentioned, and even Bluetooth is its child. This technology defines two different modes of wireless transfer.
Infrastructure: this mode has an access point like the antenna, which is connected to wireless setup. The wireless setup has components namely, Basic Service Set (BSS). When large number of BSS combines they form the extended service set (ESS). The most important thing in this configuration that we have to be attached to a wired line finally to get access to the internet.
Adhoc: in adhoc configuration, we do not need any external system to provide the services. Here the systems or the devices transfer data within themselves. Thus we do not need any access point to communicate with external wired lines in this configuration. This is the basis of Bluetooth where we do not need any external network to deal with, the devices communicate among themselves.
Wireless network can provide you basic wireless facilities like email check, chatting etc. but you cannot transfer audio and video files on wireless network, for the simple reason that the bandwidth is not enough yet to support these kind of file transfers. Thus WiFi might solve your problem of wireless connectivity but it cannot provide you all the services as is provided by wired network. The normal speed of a wireless network is 11 mega bits per second. Here the problem arises when number of user increases. You can increase a wire in case of wired connection but cannot increase the bandwidth in wireless.
