Wireless, means some something without wires. Wireless networks were seen as a dream few years back. No one would have ever thought that we can communicate with our loved ones without having a physical connection between us. But wireless technology came and changed it all. It gave technology the most important boost ever.
Many of you might be wondering that how this happens and how can data actual travel trough the air and reach the recipient. Well to begin with, the technology used by these wireless devices placed in the wireless network is known as radio transmission. It uses the radio waves to transmit data and voice. The communication can be between computers, mobile handsets or any other wireless enabled device.
The basis of this technology is digital transmission of data where every piece of information is sent in the form of binary bits that are 0 or 1. This digital form of data can be easily converted to electrical signals and hence work well with radio transmission systems. The frequency of sending these patterns of 0s and 1s is so fast that it seems like a continuous analog flow of data to human ears. It is somewhat similar to Morse code where dots and dashes were sent using beeps to the receiver. This is what wireless networking is, you send data in the form of bits rather than dots and dashes to the receiver using the radio communication system. In wireless system the speed of the transmitter and the receiver must match so that the receiver can catch the data sent by the transmitter, otherwise there will be a mismatch between the two and we get distorted output at the receiver end. This process of keeping transmitter and receiver working at same frequencies to avoid ant discrepancies is known as synchronization.
Wireless networks use really high frequency to transmit data, so as to send huge chunk of data in one second. Most of the wireless networks are based around the working frequency of 2.4 gigahertz. This is similar to the working frequency of mobile phones and micro wave ovens. This high frequency put the limit on the wavelength of the wireless networks and hence wireless networks within a limited region. Wireless networks also use frequency hopping technique where frequency bandwidth is divided among various smaller portions to allow number of users to use them simultaneously.
