Smart Cards and biometrics

Smart cards as the name suggest are a smart work of technology and biology. Well technology you all would have understood, but biology, sounds awkward, am I right. Biology is used because they are nowadays based on biometrics which is completely based on human biology. That is what makes smart cards completely spectacular and amazing cards to use and possess. These cards are really popular and in demand in Europe, America and Australia.

Now let us understand what smart cards are. These are cards that have a particular key in binary coded decimals to you locks. You have to insert the cards into the lock groove and have to slide it. The card reader will read the key in fraction of seconds and within no time you will get the lock unlocked of the key matches the entries in the database of the card reader. This is what was used earlier. Today manufacturers have become so advanced that they have manufacture smart cards that are non-contact type and do not require any contact with the card readers. You just have to place the card at a certain minimum distance from the lock and the door will open. These cards are based on the bi-directional data flow utilizing RFID technology.

The manufacturers have combined smart cards and biometrics to provide the ultimate security to the customers. These cards are embedded with keys that are almost 64-bits in length and it is almost next to impossible to decode the key with the help of cryptography or hacking tools. These keys are known as encrypted keys and the producers are able to give extremely safe qualifications for right of entry and at the same time open up a complete pool of possibilities to the customers.

Let us now understand how smart cards can be used with biometrics. These cards store the keys that are a general fact. Now what we can do is that instead of placing a binary key we can place a biometric key in the card. These cards can store biometric information which will allow a quick and safe response from biometric authentication readers. Thus you can have your retina templates or the finger prints stored in the smart card which can be used as a key to card readers known as the biometric authentication readers. This saves a lot of time because now the processor will have to perform only one check rather then to check the whole data base.
