A Domain Name is a user friendly name which is used for the unique identification of the IP addresses. We know that internet has a global scope. Therefore a large number of hosts are present on the internet. Every host has to be provided with a unique IP address. An IP address is quite difficult to remember as it is four byte long sequence of numbers so, what we do is assign a name to every IP address as per our convenience. We only have to remember that, the names must be unique so as to uniquely identify the IP addresses.
The domain name basically maps the IP addresses and the domain names which are user friendly. You have to register for the domain name that you are using, as there are a large number of services operating on the internet so this market is competitive. There can be various domain types like .com which is the most widely used domain type. An example of the address can be given as kkk.com, here kkk is the domain name and .com is the domain type. A domain type can be country domain, a generic domain etc. The country domain type is used specifically for a country. Like, uk is used for the United Kingdom, us is used for United States etc. The addresses look like this: xxx.uk, yyy.us.
Besides the country domain type, there exists another domain type named generic domain type which is used for behavioral work, like .com symbolizes commercial activities. So, .com domain type is used to represent that a web site is used for commercial purposes. Like wise, .org is used for organizations, .mil is used for military purposes, .gov is used for government agencies, .net is used for network organizations, .edu is used for educational web sites etc.
These domain types come under the Top Level Domain Types (TLDs), .com being the best known TLD till to date. Before using a domain name you have to first register your domain name, for example in United Kingdom there is a domain name registration service named Discount domain which is assigning the registration to the domain names. Also it provides services like hosting to the users. So, the use of domain names has certainly removed the overheads involved in writing the long IP addresses again and again much to the delight of the users who can now choose names according to their convenience.
