Domain name servers

The domain name servers (DNS) are working behind the scenes of the internet in order to facilitate the users. The domain name servers actually follow a system named domain naming system in which the mapping between the domain names and the four byte long sequence of the IP addresses is done. Writing the four byte long sequence of numbers is a Herculean task which we do not have to worry now, after the development of the domain name servers. You can choose the domain names according to your own ease.

When we are writing the name of the website as abc.com, actually the IP address gets forwarded which may be for example 22.33.44.88. The mapping between abc.com and the IP address 22.33.44.88 is done by the domain naming servers (DNS).

The domain naming servers have to constantly keep track about the changes which are happening around. So, the DNS has to keep itself up to date. Every DNS can not perform the mapping of every IP address instead it can only perform the mapping of those IP addresses which are local to them. For example a web site created using the IP address in London can only be mapped by the domain naming server present there.

There are various domain naming servers which are present around the world. Each DNS is associated with certain IP addresses which are local to it, they can perform the mapping of only these IP addresses. For the communication on internet these DNS have to interact with each other.

For example if you want to send a mail then the DNS of the sender side will have to communicate with the DNS of the receiver side in order to take the mail to its desired destination. So, the domain naming servers have to keep them updated all the time. All the DNS maintains records of every website which is connected to it.

If a web site changes its DNS host, then these two servers must be updated. The DNS server which is the new host of that web site has to this send information to the higher DNS servers telling them that, it is the new master of this web site. All of the processes involved in the communication between the sending and the receiving DNS are kept transparent from the users. So, the DNS servers certainly have made the job of operating internet a lot easier.
